Announcement: College Board's AP Reading

Dear fellow world historian,

Positions are still available to participate in the June 2007 AP World History Reading!

As you probably know, the Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) has been offering an exam in World History since 2002. It was the largest launch in AP history, and has the fastest growth trajectory of any AP exam, increasing about 30 percent a year. This year we are anticipating over 100,000 exams. Like all AP courses, AP World History gives high school students exposure to college-level material through involvement in an AP course, and gives them the opportunity to show what they have learned by taking an AP Exam. Colleges and universities may then grant credit, placement, or both to these students based on their AP Exam grades.

The success of AP World History certainly represents an affirmation of world history, but it also means that every year we need more Readers to read, evaluate, and score AP students' essay responses. Readers are essential to the success of the Reading — and to the AP Program overall — because they ensure that students receive AP grades that accurately reflect college-level achievement in each discipline.

Please consider applying to be an AP World History Reader. You are also encouraged to ask a colleague to apply. Readers from colleges or universities must be teaching at least one course comparable to the AP World History course as described in the Course Description for AP World History. Readers from secondary schools must be currently teaching an AP World History course. The AP World History Reading will be held June 2-8 in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Participants receive a stipend, are provided with housing and meals, and reimbursed for travel expenses, though few do it for the money. Common reasons given for returning year after year are the opportunities to:

  •        Exchange ideas and concepts with peers.
  •        Establish friendships and a network of faculty in their discipline who can serve as resources.
  •        Discover what bright, hardworking students from around the world are learning and the heights of excellence they can achieve.
  •        Practice establishing and using a rubric consistently.
  •        Receive Continuing Education Units and Professional Development Hours.

To learn more about AP, visit AP Central™, the College Board's online home for AP professionals at apcentral.collegeboard.com.

If you would like to apply to be an AP Reader, you can complete an online application at www.ets.org/reader/ap. Feel free to call Performance Scoring Services at ETS with any questions by telephone at (609) 406-5384 or via e-mail at apreader@ets.org. Applications are accepted throughout the year but you are encouraged to apply now to be considered for appointment to this year's Reading.

I hope you will consider this opportunity to participate in the AP World History Reading, and look forward to seeing you in Colorado!

Merry Wiesner-Hanks

AP World History Chief Reader
